Poster for Looking at Flowers

Looking at Flowers: A Photographer's Tribute
Art Upstairs Gallery | Charlottesville, VA
August 6 - 30, 2009

Georgia O'Keeffe once said, "Nobody sees a flower - really." Since reading that quote, I have tried to look, really look, at the flowers that surround us. Some are perfect, some are too interesting to be perfect, but they are all gems of delicate complexity and grace. "Looking at Flowers" is my attempt to share what I have seen. So take a look -- who knows what you'll see.

black and white photo of tree in snow Snow Fall

Following the "Blizzard of '09" my husband and I went for a walk in Prospect Park at sunset. The fresh snow and setting sun created a dazzling landscape.

photo of bright red leaves Afternoon Light

All these photos were taken on November 25, 2009 during a one-ish hour walk along the Rivanna Trail. The light was extraordinary.

black and white photo of tree branch Sun and Fog

One December morning my backyard was transformed by sunlight scattering through a slowly dissipating fog. I rarely display the same digital negative in color and b+w, but the contrast between the sunlight in the color and the haze in the b+w created two distinct photographs for each image.

photo of the Brooklyn Bridge CityScapes

I am a big city mouse. My first love as a photographer was the architectural details scattered throughout New York City. Then I moved to Chicago, then I moved to Charlottesville, VA, and only then did I get a digital camera. Whenever I get the chance to return to my cities I take all the pictures I can, so this grouping will grow with each holiday trip until I finish my PhD and move back. Then it will explode.

Black and White photo of an American Flag Ride to the Wall

On the Sunday before Memorial Day, thousands of veterans on Harley Davidson motorcycles ride to the Vietnam Memorial in Operation Rolling Thunder, to protest the POW and MIA soldiers left behind. The sight of men and women so patriotic and iconoclastic at the same time reminded me why I love my country.

Poster designed for show - Animal, Vegetable, Mineral

Animal, Vegetable, Mineral: Slices of the (Mostly) Natural World
Alderman Library | Charlottesville, VA
October 2008 - June 2009

This was my first show, and the offer to display my work came up rather suddenly. I wanted to use my best photos to date, and in casting about for a title for an otherwise unrelated collection of images, I decided to go as broad as possible.

A photograph of the reddest strawberry you have ever seen All Photos

Here they are. Everything from the shows above, plus plenty more. And yes, that was a real strawberry, no photo manipulation whatsoever. I ate it myself after the photo shoot was over.
